The April / May 2012 issue of Songlines features a review of the Uniko DVD by Kronos Quartet / Kimmo Pohjonen / Samuli Kosminen:

“Kimmo Pohjonen’s Uniko project with the Kronos Quartet was a TOTW album in #75. This magnificent DVD of their performances at the Helsinki Festival in 2004 show what an extraordinary piece of music this is. The music created by accordionist Pohjonen and hid electronic drum pad colleague Samuli Kosminen simply transcends borders. It is folk, avant-garde, classical and unlike anything you’ve ever heard before. aThis DVD of the concerts at the Helsinki Festival is very well directed and filmed to bring the excitement of the music across – not an easy task with six seated musicians on stage. But body-building accordion wielder Pohjonen looks muscular and powerful. Kosminen gets into his drum pads and Kronos look extremely dynamic too, with big close-ups of bows on strings and dramatic crash zooms. With a narrow depth of focus that brings out the drama of this music and great sound, it clearly shows what quality filming can do compared to the YouTube perspective. There’s also a very good “Making Of” bonus DVD with good interviews from Pohjonen, Kosminen and Kronos. This is a DVD that really takes you into an extraordinary concert and the creative work surrounding the music.” (Simon Broughton)

July 4 : Uniko in fourth month in World Music Charts Europe Top Ten
The Uniko album by Kimmo Pohjonen / Samuli Kosminen and Kronos Quartet, released by Ondine of Finland, is now in its fourth month in the WMCE / World Music Charts Europe Top Ten, this month
July 2011 in position Number 5. For May and June, Uniko was at the Number 2 position after debuting at Number 6 in April.

Six Degrees magazine of Finland reviewed Uniko for their June issue:

"For those who don't know, Kimmo Pohjonen is an unconventional accordion virtuoso from Finland involved in many extraordinary projects. Now, Pohjonen, Samuli Kosminen and the Kronos Quartet join forces in an alluring performance of masterpiece magnitudes. The result is a great 52 minutes of otherworldly high not to be missed. Uniko is currently in second position on the World Music Chart Europe, where it has been hanging on for the last three months. The record contains seven chapters composed by Pohjonen and Kosminen. Critics have praised the record as "majestic", "compelling" and "hypnotic". Uniko is indeed all those and more. "

The Uniko album by Kimmo Pohjonen / Samuli Kosminen and Kronos Quartet remains at the Number 2 position on the World Music Charts Europe (June, 2011 chart).  For a view of the chart, visit the
WMCE website.
“Kronos, ever questing for fresh shapes in their string quartet music, add point and film-epic feel to Pohjonen’s accordion-looping compositions, sampled and manipulated by Kosminen’s electronics. The structuredness and tense humanity of the strings and dense, curling crashing waves of accordion make this one of his most aurally satisfying recent works.” (fRoots)

The Uniko album by Kimmo Pohjonen / Samuli Kosminen and Kronos Quartet jumped four places on the World Music Charts Europe (May chart) and is now at position Number 2.  For a view of the chart please visit the

March 23 : Uniko - 5 star ***** review / Top of the World pick in Songlines
The Uniko CD by Kimmo Pohjonen / Samuli Kosminen / Kronos Quartet received a 5 star review in Songlines magazine (UK) and was picked in Songlines'  "Top of the World" selection with the piece "Plasma" featured on the free covermount CD.

"Kimmo Pohjonen is not just one of the world’s finest accordion players, he’s a composer of panoramic vision, a consummate stage performer, producer and innovator. We’ve known all this for a long time but with UNIKO his importance in the contemporary music world is now unquestionable. The seeds were planted for thiscollaboration with one of the most famous of all string quartets in 2002 when Kronos leader David Harrington heard recordings of Pohjonen and his brilliant sampling and programming partner Samuli Kosminen. Within two years the musicians were performing together and exploring new sounds for accordion and strings, alongside accordion samples and string samples as well as various effects. Pohjonen and Kosminen describe this seven-movement work as an adventure for performers and listeners. UNIKO stretches out a huge canvas for a wide palette of musical and emotional experiences. The sounds are finely crafted with immaculate detail; the energy is raw and uncompromising, warm and lyrical. Perhaps it’s unfair to single out any particular track, but anyone familiar with Pohjonen’s work to date will fall immediately for ‘Emo’, wherein his trademark depth of sound and harmonies lead so naturally towards the Kronos sound on an aural journey that takes the listener on a rare adventure both poignant and chilling". (Fiona Talkington) .

Jan 20 : Kimmo Pohjonen / Samuli Kosminen / Kronos Quartet - Uniko CD release, Feb 9
The long awaited album Uniko by Kimmo Pohjonen, Samuli Kosminen and Kronos Quartet will be released on CD and digital download in Finland on February 9 by Finnish record company Ondine. International releases: Germany - Feb 14, North America – Feb 22, Japan - Feb 23, UK - Feb 28 and worldwide throughout February and March, 2011.
Uniko is the seven-part work composed by Pohjonen and Kosminen which had its World Premiere concert with Kronos Quartet at the Helsinki Festival in 2004. Subsequent Uniko performances took place in Moscow, Norway and its North American Premiere with three sold-out concerts at the BAM NEXT WAVE Festival in New York in 2007. The Uniko album was recorded at Avatar studio in NYC, produced by Iceland's Valgeir Sigurðsson, mixed at Greenhouse studio in Reykjavik, with additional recordings and mixes in Helsinki.

“The music is sheer physicality”… “Uniko is like an ocean tide coming in. Big waves of sound build in complexity, animation and sometimes sheer frenzy, then abruptly retreat into small lyrical moments, amplified pizzicatos or buzzings by some huge and imaginary insect. Mr. Pohjonen, a virtuoso on an accordion wired for sound, guided things along and became so excited at the end that one worried about his well-being.”
– Bernard Holland, The New York Times, 5.10.2007

The KTU group enjoyed a smashing success at the FMM Festival in Sines, Portugal, one of the best festivals in Europe. On July 30, KTU performed to about 7000 people in a show with Master Musicians of Jajouka and Irish band Kila. Organizers say the ticket sales for that concert was the highest in the seven year history of the festival. Reviews from all four major papers were rave, for example from Diario de Noticias: "KTU, with the "diabolic" Kimmo Pohjonen, were the most applauded band of the last day of the festival..... If The Master Musicians of Jajouka are the ancestral spirits who's music has timeless resonance, KTU - "elected" by the crowd as the highlight of the night - imprison those same spirits in the urban schizophrenia of today. The project that reunites the Finnish Kluster (the accordionist Kimmo Pohjonen and the percussions and electronic samples man Samuli Kosminen) to the drummer Pat Mastelotto and the guitarist Trey Gunn, created on stage the hellish environment usual in Pohjonens music and went further to create convulsive, ghostly music, able to release gargoyles from its cement skin - and they, scarily, danced slow waltzes, improvised gothic jazz, adding unexpected funk in the encore, which was muscular and overwhelming.". Live foto by Koh Okabe can be seen on the KTU page.
